Guitar Lesson FAQs

How long are the lessons?

Lessons are one hour or half an hour and either option is one to one.  This allows you to learn at your own pace.

What happens during my first lesson?

A first lesson is mainly having a chat and discussing what your goals are with playing guitar.  You may not have ever picked up a guitar before.  Everyone has different aspirations.  It maybe you just want to be able to strum a few of your favourite songs at home, or you may want to be up on stage playing gigs!  You may even already be playing gigs but feel stuck in a rut with your playing.  You may well just want to do exams.  Lessons are one to one and designed to suit you.  I will set small achievable goals each lesson.

Do I need a guitar?

If you just want to see what guitar playing is about I would recommend having a trial lesson before buying a guitar.  If you are serious about playing then yes, you will need to buy your own guitar to practice on.

Do I need to bring an amp?

No, you do not need to carry an amp around.  Your guitar will be plugged into my computer for amplification.

What should I buy to start and how much will it cost?

I recommend a Yamaha Pacifica or a Fender Squier Stratocaster as ideal beginners guitars.

How much do I need to practice?

Be prepared to practice a minimum of 20 minutes per day.

How long will it take me to play songs I like?

This will vary on time spent practicing the more you put in the more you will get out. It’s that simple!

Do you teach bass?

Yes.  I teach bass and can offer Rockschool exams in playing the bass up to Grade 3.

Do you teach acoustic guitar?

Yes.  I do teach acoustic guitar and studied classical guitar for several years.

Do I have to learn to read music?

No.  You do not have to read music to play guitar.  You can also still do exams without reading music, if you require.  Some of the greatest guitar players in the world can not read a note of music!

Do I have to do exams?

No, you do not have to do exams.  Lessons are one to one and designed for you to get what you want out of the guitar.

How can I make payments for guitar lessons ?

Lessons are to be paid on the day by cash or cheque.  I require 24 hours notice to cancel a lesson. Lesson Prices can be found here

Is there a minimum age you start teaching at?

There is no minimum age, though it would be beneficial if the child has a good understanding of the alphabet.

Do you teach people who are retired ?

Yes.  I find many people who are retired can do extremely well at playing guitar.
